Cornelious lifts Granite City over Alexandria, 4-1

Behind a great game by Trevor Cornelious, who had two goals, Granite City defeated Alexandria, 4-1.

Cornelious\’ tallies came on the power play at 4:17 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Granite City and on the power play 12:47 into the second to make the score 3-1 Granite City.

Granite City\’s offense rang up 35 shots on Alexandria\’s net. Team could not crack Alexandria\’s penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having 14 opportunities to play with the man advantage. Granite City\’s defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Others who scored for Granite City included Tommy Giller and Lucas Carroll, who each put in one. In addition, Granite City received assists from Logan Neu, who had two and Tyler Mros, Braden Altena, Tanner Skaja, and Kevin Finley, who each chipped in one.

Alexandria forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 13 minors and one major for 61 minutes in penalty time. Alexandria surpassed its season average of 43.0 penalty minutes per game. Alexandria found itself stymied offensively, and got off a mere 13 shots against Granite City\’s defense.

Alexandria was led by Mason Hautala, who scored the team\’s only goal. Hautala scored on the power play 5:43 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Granite City. A tripping penalty on Mathew Sprink had put Alexandria on the power play. Trent Olson assisted on the tally.

Robbie Goor made 12 saves for Granite City on 13 shots. Granite City incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Alexandria\’s Evan Bisek stopped 31 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Alexandria registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
