Blizzard Split Weekend Stay Perfect at Home

Alexandria hit the road on Friday to take on Willmar before playing New Ulm at home on Saturday for the first time this season.

Friday night Alexandria played Willmar tough but couldn’t recover from a tough 1st period falling 5-2. The Blizzard started fast scoring 1:39 into the game on Michael Debrito’s 5th of the season off assists from Ben Tschida and Joe Gronholz. But Willmar came back with 4 unanswered goals to close out the first period. The Blizzard outshot Willmar 13-9 but trailed 4-1 heading into the 2nd period. Ben Tschida scored the lone goal in the 2nd with assists from Debrito and Gronholz to pull within 4-2 after two. Willmar held on in the 3rd adding one more goal for the 5-2 victory.

Saturday night the Blizzard hosted New Ulm and improved to 4-0 on home ice with a 4-2 victory. The Blizzard came out firing again unloading 24 shots on net in the 1st period, en route to 61 for the game, but couldn’t solve New Ulm’s goaltender Zach Foster. After a scoreless 1st period Michael Debrito once again gave the Blizzard a lead 5 minutes into the 2nd with his 6th of the season. Wyatt Johnson, and Joe Gronholz picked up the assists. New Ulm tied the game a few minutes later, but towards the end of the 2nd period Zach DeMarce scored his 1st Blizzard goal for a 2-1 lead heading into the third. New Ulm came back again to tie the game at 2-2, but a couple minutes later Justin Wasvick put the Blizzard back on top at 3-2. Matt Mcintyre added an empty netter to seal the 4-2 victory. Joey Greilich stopped 23 shots for his 3rd win in a row. Wyatt Johnson picked up 3 assists. The Blizzard will host New Ulm again on Friday night and then complete a home and home with the Steel on Saturday. Friday night is Breast Cancer Awareness Night brought to you by Integrity Title. Pink Specialty jerseys will be worn and auctioned off with proceeds going to the Douglas County Relay for Life.
