Alexandria survives Twin City comeback, wins 6-5

The Alexandria Blizzard, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Twin City Steel and clinched a 6-5 victory.

Alexandria led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Blizzard\’s AJ Gullickson scored at 11:36 in the second period to put Alexandria up 4-1.

The Blizzard were sparked by Gavin Mindt, who finished with one goal. Mindt scored 12:40 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Alexandria. Tony Arias assisted on the tally.

In a losing effort, Twin City was led by Russel Barone, who had two goals and one assist. Barone scored the first of his two goals at 14:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Twin City. Aharon Lara provided the assist. Barone\’s next tally made the score 6-5 Alexandria with 1:35 left in the third period. Lance Carney assisted on the tally.

Alexandria put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Steel to score on any of their four power plays. The Blizzard\’s offense rang up 43 shots on Twin City\’s net. Alexandria bested its season scoring average. The Blizzard average 3.8 goals per game. Alexandria could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Alexandria also got points from Tyler Sworsky, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Jake Wasem, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Alexandria also had goals scored by Logan Norman and Aaron Ryback, who scored one goal each. In addition, Alexandria received assists from Tom Schmidt, who had two and Tom Monteiro, Kyle Jones, Bo Gronseth, and Nate Mettenburg, who contributed one each.

The Steel\’s penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Alexandria power plays. Twin City kept the Blizzard\’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Tanner Elmore made 48 saves on 53 shots.

Twin City additionally got points from Mathias Ahman, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Lara, who also registered one goal and two assists. Twin City also got a goal from Tom Reilly as well. More assists for Twin City came via Jay Paul, who had one and Jared Erickson, who had two.

Robbie Goor made 37 saves for the Steel on 43 shots. Twin City incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
