Blizzard Win Sunday Earn Weekend Split

Nov 15, 2021

Alexandria hit the road again this past weekend traveling to Mason City to take on the 2nd place Toros, looking for a little revenge from the opening weekend series back in September.

Saturday night the Blizzard dug themselves a hole and couldn’t get out dropping the opener 5-2. After trailing 3-0 entering the 2nd period the Blizzard struck early when Matt McIntyre scored off a nice feed from Joe Gronholz at the 3:54 mark. Kaden Peterson also assisted on McIntyre’s 5th of the season. Five minutes later it was Gronholz with his 5th of the year to pull the Blizzard within one at 3-2. Michael Debrito and Erick Sanborn picked up the assists. The Blizzard got a late power play opportunity in the second but gave up a shorthanded goal to fall behind 4-2. Mason City added one in the third for the 5-2 victory.

Sunday night saw the Blizzard turn the tables on the Toros with a 5-2 victory to salvage a weekend split. It was Alexandria who had the upper hand in the 1st period on Sunday getting an unassisted shorthanded goal from Ethan Moerke and a power play goal from Cole Klingbeil for a 2-0 lead after one. Matt MacIntyre scored another power play goal early in the second redirecting a blast from Kaden Peterson for his 6th of the year. Mason City came back with two late goals in the second, but the Blizzard slammed the door in the third outshooting the Toros 14-3 and tacking on two more goals. Zach DeMarce gave the Blizzard a cushion midway through and Michael Debrito capped off the night with an empty netter for his team leading 11th goal. Ethan Moerke and Joe Gronholz had 2 point nights and Bailey Rosch stopped 22-24 for the victory in his return from injury.

Alexandria (8-7 – 16 points) have won 8 of their last 10 games and sit in 3rd place one point ahead of Willmar in the Western Division. They will travel to New Ulm on Wednesday for a 7:10 pm start before returning home on Saturday night to host the Warhawks at 7:10 pm.
