Blizzard win 3 over weekend

Nov 29, 2012

The Blizzard picked up three wins over the weekend, stopping the Minnesota Flying Aces 6-2, then defeating Breezy Point 9-0 and 5-2 to improve to 10-5.

Alexandria played Wednesday night at Granite City, and will play tonight at home when the Blizzard hosts Twin City.

Alexandria 6, Minnesota 2

Both Joe Anderson and Ian Ecklund had a pair of goals in the Blizzard’s 6-2 win over the Minnesota Flying Aces Friday, despite their team’s 41 minutes in the penalty box.

Anderson scored just 56 seconds into the second period, and added another at 4:44 in the third, and added an assist on Ian Ecklund’s first goal of the third period at 1:00. Ecklund, whose second goal came at 8:29 of the third, also helped Anderson out with an assist on his second goal of the game.

Both teams played fairly even through the first two periods, leaving the game tied at 2-2. Alexandria found an offensive burst in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals while blasting Flying Aces goalie Yasu TakaHashi with 24 shots.

Kyle Miller stopped 20 of 22 shots on the net for the win.

On the upside, the Blizzard outdid itself in the scoring column with six goals. The team had been averaging 3.3 goals per game through the early going of the season.

On the downside, Alexandria suffered from a lack of discipline on the ice, racking up 41 minutes of penalty time and had Ryen Zerfas ejected from the game.

Alexandria 9, Breezy Point 0

A three-goal first period was more than enough for a Blizzard win Saturday night as Alexandria went on to a 9-0 victory over Breezy Point behind Alexandria native Garrett Skinner’s four assists and one goal.

It was a night where the Blizzard shared the offense as Mick Dhein had two goals and Skinner, Bryce Mitzel, Nate Mettenburg, Karson Kuntz, Austin Rudnick, Danny Pelzer and Anderson had one each.

The Blizzard defense was stalwart throughout the game, holding off the North Stars three times on the power play, and Chase Wilson had 11 saves in goal for Alexandria.

Alexandria 5, Breezy Point 2

Alexandria didn’t allow Breezy Point on the board until the game was decided as the Blizzard picked up a 5-2 win Sunday night.

Ecklund had two goals and an assist in the win as Alexandria improved to 10-5 in the NA3HL West standings, with one shootout loss.

The Blizzard defense again proved a force to be reckoned with as they skated off six power plays by the North Stars.

Chase Wilson had 20 saves in goal for Alexandria, which also saw Blizzard player Levi Erickson ejected from the game as the team incurred 49 minutes in penalties.
