The Alexandria Blizzard hosted Granite City Friday night at the Runestone Community Center. The Blizzard jumped out to an early lead when Nolan Westra scored his 2nd of the season. Carter Rieland and Jack Taylor picked up the assists. Granite City tied the game a half minute later and added another goal on the power play for 2-1 lead after one. The game was halted with just under five minutes to play in the 1st period when Shane Birkeland took a hit into the boards. Birkeland was eventually carted off, and suffered a concussion. Fortunately the Blizzard will have him back once he’s out of the concussion protocol. Alexandria could not capitalize on their 5 minute power play that resulted from the hit. Granite City added two more goals in the 2nd period and skated away with a 4-1 win.
