Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Alexandria Blizzard defeated the Breezy Point North Stars in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).
The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Breezy Point\’s shootout goal was scored by Joe Costello. Alexandria\’s other shootout goal was scored by AJ Gullickson.
The Blizzard overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Alexandria fell behind 2-1 after a power play goal by the North Stars\’ Linder Kenyon at 1:43 in the third period. The Blizzard tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Gavin Mindt at 12:04 in the third period.
Breezy Point was unable to stop Alexandria from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blizzard eventually piled up 55 shots on goal. Alexandria found itself short handed often, totaling 26 penalty minutes and allowing four power plays.
Alexandria also got points from Bo Gronseth, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Alexandria received assists from Nate Mettenburg, who had one and Kyle Jones, who had two.
The North Stars kept the Blizzard\’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Tanner Elmore made 33 saves on 35 shots.
Breezy Point was led by Tyler Larwood, who racked up one goal and one assist. Larwood scored on the power play 13:59 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Breezy Point. A high sticking penalty on Tom Schmidt had put the North Stars on the power play. Ryan Mezera provided the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Breezy Point were Sean Viti, who had one.
Alexandria registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For the Blizzard, Elmore was ejected from the game. Jaxson Gosnell recorded 52 saves for Breezy Point. The North Stars incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
