The Alexandria Blizzard\’s Bo Gronseth scored 2:20 into overtime to beat the Granite City Lumberjacks, 4-3 (OT).
Alexandria came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Blizzard was down 3-1 after a power play goal by Granite City\’s Dallas Marvin at 13:07 in the second period. Alexandria knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Tyler Berginski at 11:09 in the third period.
The Blizzard got the win on the strength of a great game by Gronseth, who had two goals and two assists. Gronseth scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:39 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Granite City. Alexandria had gained a power play chance when Corey Taylor was whistled for roughing. Berginski assisted on the tally. Gronseth\’s next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Alexandria with 17:40 left in overtime. The Blizzard had gotten the advantage when the Lumberjacks\’ Tyler Mros was sent off for checking from behind. Kyle Jones picked up the assist.
Alexandria could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game.
Alexandria additionally got points from Berginski, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Eric Hewitt also scored for Alexandria. Other players who recorded assists for Alexandria were Jody Randall, who had one.
The Blizzard were unable to stop Granite City from sending pucks towards the net, and the Lumberjacks eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. Granite City\’s penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Lumberjacks finished with 26 penalty minutes.
Evan Bisek made 30 saves for Alexandria on 33 shots. The Blizzard registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. Jesse Garcia recorded 22 saves for Granite City. The Lumberjacks registered one goal on eight power play opportunities.
