We are planning ahead for the year 2008.  Our goal is to bump up to offering TWO meals per month -- one on the 1st Thursday and one on the 3rd Thursday, beginning the 1st Thursday in February. Every month of 2008 is currently open.  Plan ahead with us!

More Information about Neighborhood Table

The Neighborhood Table is a volunteer community meal/soup kitchen program offering a free meal to anyone who is in need. The concept of The Neighborhood Table originated in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Several people in the community decided to establish a monthly program to serve a dinner meal for people in need and those who are seeking companionship.

The program in Wisconsin has been operating successfully for almost four years. What began as a monthly meal has become a very popular weekly event that includes a meal delivery program.

CLICK HERE for more information on the "Original" Neighborhood table!

In an effort to make a contribution to the community that supports their team and graciously hosts their seasonal living, the Blizzard hockey team is embarking on an effort to establish a similar meal program. Although the Alexandria program will be held only one time monthly, it is our hope that the program will grow into a weekly offering that includes meal delivery.

The Blizzard would like to encourage community participation on a voluntary basis to institute this cooperative program.

PROGRAM DETAILS and VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Neighborhood Table operates entirely through volunteers and community sponsors. A meal is served on the third Thursday of each month at the same location. St. Mary's Church, located on 5th Avenue and Hawthorne in Alexandria, has graciously agreed to provide a kitchen and dining room facility for the monthly meals, as well as a small storage area for Neighborhood Table paper products and supplies

Each meal is sponsored by a local fraternal organization or business.

  • The sponsoring group pays for the meals and meal incidentals such as paper products.
  • The sponsoring group also provides volunteers to serve the meals.
  • In the event the sponsoring group is unable to or prefers not to serve, the Blizzard hockey team will serve the meal and the sponsoring group issues a check to cover the meal and expenses.

Community help and support is vital to the success of the program. We are seeking volunteers to assist the team in soliciting sponsoring groups, coordinating schedules and conducting awareness and publicity for the program. We are also in need of volunteers who are willing to help make the community aware of the program.

 HOW YOU CAN HELP

1.        Sponsor a Meal

If you belong to fraternal organization or business which might be interested in sponsoring a meal, we will provide any necessary information for you to promote sponsorship. Alternatively, members of the Blizzard hockey team would be happy to make a presentation for your organization about the project opportunities.

2.  Make a Donation

A non-profit group in Minnesota is only required to formally file for tax-exempt status when annual donations exceed $25,000.00.  In this first year, the Blizzard does not anticipate contributions which exceed this amount. However, we will gratefully accept your contribution and use it to cover unforeseen and incidental costs, as well as advertising and outreach costs.

3.  Volunteer

The Neighborhood Table will always need volunteers to assist with ongoing administrative tasks, as well as any physical assistance required by a sponsoring group in serving a meal. We welcome volunteers of every age!

To participate in this program in ANY capacity, Please contact the Blizzard office at 763-1413, or Lisa Loftquist at 834-3235.  With your help we are looking forward to making this program a great success.
